Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-032 Bluebeard – gloss ceramic glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-032 Bluebeard is a ceramic glaze in a 236 ml container, which you apply to damp clay, bisque-fired ware and stoneware. It fires to a gloss finish and needs no additional clear glaze.
Stroke & Coat is a Mayco glaze series whose colours can be mixed with one another. Bluebeard is a solid colour and becomes opaque at cone 6 in an oxidising firing, without any change of colour. That is an advantage if you want to use the same glaze in both low-fire and high-fire work.
Application and coverage
You apply the glaze with a brush. According to Mayco, one coat gives a translucent result, and Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full opacity. The number of coats therefore determines how much of the surface underneath shows through. Because the colours in the series can be mixed with one another, you can create your own shades. Diluted with water or medium, it produces wash or watercolour effects.
Firing and dinnerware
Mayco gives cone 06 to cone 10 for Stroke & Coat, oxidising or reducing. The behaviour at cone 6 differs from colour to colour: Bluebeard stays opaque at cone 6 in an oxidising firing and does not change colour, whereas other colours in the series may differ. Even so, fire a test piece first, using your own clay and your own kiln programme. According to Mayco, the surface is considered dinnerware safe after correct firing (Dinnerware Safe). If you glaze dinnerware, use only glazes intended for that purpose, and take care not to contaminate brushes and containers with other glazes.
