Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-054 Vanilla Dip – opaque, glossy glaze for clay and stoneware

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-054 Vanilla Dip (listed by Mayco as SC-54) is an opaque, glossy ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You build it up layer by layer: one coat looks translucent, and the opacity increases with further coats. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The glaze fires glossy without an additional clear glaze.

All colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with one another. Thinned, they give softer gradients and transparent effects. The glaze is supplied in 236 ml (8 fl oz) and can be fired in oxidation and in reduction.

Firing range and reference firing

Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 10 for Stroke & Coat. The maturing firing for which the glazes are formulated is cone 06/05. This helps you plan: you can glaze greenware or bisque for the maturing firing and later also use the colour in a stoneware firing.

• Reference firing: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Firing range up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Oxidation or reduction firing possible

Vanilla Dip in a stoneware firing

At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, Vanilla Dip stays opaque according to Mayco, and the colour lightens slightly. At mid and high temperatures, designs may run. Mayco therefore recommends a test with your own clay and kiln. The behaviour at cone 6 is also stated on the label.

Application and dinnerware

Apply the glaze with a brush in 2–3 coats. Fired according to Mayco's instructions, it is dinnerware safe according to Mayco. Stroke & Coat carries the ACMI AP seal, so it is exempt from hazard labelling according to ACMI. The manufacturer of the finished ware is responsible for food-contact testing.
