Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-048 Camel Back – glossy ceramic glaze for cone 06 to 10

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-048 Camel Back is a glossy ceramic glaze for damp greenware, bisque and stoneware. You apply it with a brush to cover surfaces and to paint lines and multicoloured designs. It fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.

Mayco formulates the Stroke & Coat series for maturing at cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range runs from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction firing. This means you can use the same glaze in an earthenware firing and in a stoneware firing.

Applying Camel Back

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it on evenly. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The number of coats determines the opacity: one coat stays translucent, while 2–3 coats make the colour opaque; Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Diluted with water, it gives softer gradients and washes. All colours in the series can be mixed with each other, so you can create your own shades.

Mid-range and high-fire

Most Stroke & Coat colours keep their shade at higher temperatures, but some may change. According to Mayco, the behaviour at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) is given on the label of the individual product. In mid-range or high-fire firings, designs may run. Mayco therefore recommends a test piece with your clay in your kiln before firing a whole piece.

Dinnerware and safety

According to Mayco, once fired as per the manufacturer's instructions, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The series carries the AP (Approved Product) seal of the ACMI and is therefore, according to the ACMI, exempt from hazard labelling. The maker of the finished piece is responsible for food-contact testing of the finished ware.
