Botz 9559 Kirschrot Liquid Glaze – warm, opaque wine red for earthenware

Kirschrot (9559) is a Botz liquid glaze in a warm, wine-red shade. It is opaque and glossy, and can be brushed onto bisque-fired ceramics. It gives bowls, cups, figures and decorative pieces in earthenware a rich red surface.

The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C. It can also be fired up to 1100 °C, which matches the Botz earthenware group 1020–1100 °C. Because the glaze is opaque, you do not need an underglaze to get an even red finish.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use, as the pigments settle at the bottom. If it is too thick, you can thin it with a little water if needed. Then brush it onto the bisque-fired piece, which must have been fired at 950 °C minimum, and leave it to dry well. Repeat the application if needed.

• Do not apply the glaze too thinly, otherwise the shade will be weaker and the surface less even
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how the shade looks in your firing

Firing and firing range

The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C and is glossy after firing. An upper limit of 1100 °C is possible. Fire within these values and follow the firing programme of your kiln.
