Botz 9518 Pfauenauge liquid glaze – opaque green with blue-grey specks
Botz 9518 Pfauenauge liquid glaze is a satin glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It gives an opaque green ground with blue-grey specks. The specks become stronger at higher temperatures. With a thicker application and a lower temperature, more green precipitates form instead. So you control the look through application thickness and firing temperature.
The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C and can be fired up to 1100 °C. This makes it an earthenware glaze. As it is opaque, the colour of the clay body has little influence on the result. It suits vessels, bowls, figures and decorative pieces made from bisque-fired clay.
Applying Pfauenauge
The glaze is for ceramics that have been bisque-fired at 950 °C or above. Method:
- Stir the glaze well, as particles settle at the bottom.
- Thin with a little water if needed.
- Apply to the bisque-fired ceramic with a brush.
- Leave to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed.
- Leave the foot ring free of glaze so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Controlling the effect
Application thickness and firing temperature determine how strongly the specks and precipitates show. If you want plenty of blue-grey specks, fire in the upper part of the recommended 1020–1060 °C. A thicker application and a lower temperature give more green precipitates instead. Make a test tile with your own clay and kiln first, so you can see the effect before glazing a larger piece.
