Mayco SP-288 Speckled Tu Tu Tango – effect glaze with yellow, blue and green speckles
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-288 Speckled Tu Tu Tango is an effect glaze with yellow, blue and green speckles for earthenware and stoneware. It comes in a 236 ml container. Its slightly thick consistency suits fine brushwork as well as even, opaque coverage. The glaze fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.
According to Mayco, Speckled Tu Tu Tango is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP (Approved Product) seal means no hazard labelling is required.
Applying the glaze
You control the opacity through the number of coats. One coat looks slightly transparent; with 2–3 coats the colour becomes strong and opaque. The speckles add extra accents of colour.
- Stir the glaze well before applying
- Apply evenly to the bisque-fired piece with a brush
- Let each coat dry completely before applying the next
- Apply 2–3 coats for strong opacity
Firing and temperature
The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco formulates the Speckled glazes in this series for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1,031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). At higher temperatures such as cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the speckles of Speckled glazes can run. So first fire a test piece made from your own clay at the temperature you intend to use. That way you can see whether the speckles stay visible as distinct dots.
