Botz Stoneware Glaze 9891 Grüngranit – satin green with effects

Grüngranit (9891) is an opaque, satin stoneware glaze from Botz in green with fine light and dark effects. The result depends on the firing temperature: at 1220 °C it gives a satin-matt greenish grey, heavily flecked with anthracite-coloured effects. At 1250 °C the green becomes strong and satin. At 1280 °C it stays satin; if applied unevenly thick, subtle running effects appear.

According to the product information, the glaze is suitable for tableware.

Because the result depends on temperature, you can get different results from a single glaze: for a greyer, stone-like look, fire at the lower end of the range; for a strong green, fire at 1250 °C. As the glaze is opaque, the colour of your clay matters less than with clear glazes. The Botz stoneware series includes other granite shades, for example 9890 Türkisgranit.

Application and firing

• For its liquid glazes, Botz recommends a bisque firing at approx. 950 °C
• Stir the glaze well and apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush (preferably 3 coats; for 1250 °C at the lower end of the range only 2 coats, for 1280 °C 2 coats)
• Firing range: 1220–1280 °C
• Recommended firing temperature: 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold

Avoiding common mistakes

Uneven coat thickness leads to runs at 1280 °C. Apply the glaze in even brush strokes and let each coat dry before applying the next. Leave the foot unglazed. According to Botz, a glaze runs if applied too thickly or fired too hot; protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash, for example Botz art. no. 90108.
