Mayco Stoneware Matte Clear SW-002 – transparent stoneware glaze, satin-matt
Mayco Stoneware Matte Clear SW-002 is a transparent stoneware glaze with a satin-matt surface for ceramics in the mid to high firing range. You use it when engobes, underglazes or textures should stay visible while the surface is still sealed. Mayco describes it as a reliable, soft matt clear glaze for cone 5/6 that can be used up to cone 10.
The finish depends on the firing: at cone 5/6 it turns satin-matt, at cone 10 it becomes more satiny with a slight sheen. It stays transparent mainly when applied thinly, while a thicker application builds opacity. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) stands, according to ACMI, for a product without hazard labelling.
Applying and firing the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing is usually at cone 04 or 06). Let each coat dry before applying the next.
- One to three coats, depending on the result you want
- Do not spray; apply with a brush, for example
- Target maturity: cone 5/6, with cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Can be used up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Combining and choosing
Mayco recommends the glaze for layering techniques, engobe/slip and underglazes, for example together with Mayco Underglazes. If you want a glossy surface, this matt clear glaze is not the right choice. A test tile made from your own clay in your own kiln shows how application thickness and firing temperature change the finish.
