Mayco Designer Liner SG-401 Black – fine lines and lettering on ceramics
The Mayco Designer Liner SG-401 in black is a clay-based, highly pigmented ceramic paint in a 37 ml bottle with a metal writing tip. You can draw fine or bold lines, lettering and illustrations straight onto ceramics, without a brush or stencil.
With a damp brush you can also blend the colour into a wash to create watercolour or ink-wash effects. Black is especially useful for outlines, lettering and graphic patterns. The liner is also available in other colours from SG-401 to SG-410. Choose the colour to suit your design.
Working with the liner
You can apply the liner to greenware, bisque or surfaces that are already glazed. Squeeze the bottle gently and guide the metal tip over the piece at an even pace. The liner is not dimensional, so the lines stay flat. Do not apply it too thickly, as it may crack and possibly flake off. It is best to practise lettering and patterns on a test tile first. Close the bottle again straight after use so that the tip does not dry out.
Firing and glaze
Fire the liner in the range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). For black, Mayco shows firings at cone 06 and cone 6, with no colour change at cone 6. Without a glaze over it, the liner fires matt. If you want to protect the lines or have them glossy, glaze with a non-running clear or semi-transparent glaze. A strongly running glaze may distort fine lines.
The product carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal. According to ACMI, this means: no hazard labelling.
