Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-075 Orange-A-Peel – glossy orange ceramic glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-075 Orange-A-Peel (Mayco code SC-75) is an orange ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque-fired ware and stoneware. The pot contains 236 ml. The glaze stays where you put it when applied, which is useful for outlines, solid areas and multicoloured designs. It fires glossy and needs no clear glaze.
Orange-A-Peel is semi-transparent: one coat looks translucent, and you control the opacity by adding coats. According to Mayco, 2–3 coats give full coverage. The colours in the range can be mixed with each other and thinned with water or medium, giving softer gradients and transparent effects.
Application and firing
You can apply the glaze to wet clay, bisque-fired ware or stoneware. Brush it on evenly and let each coat dry before applying the next. Mayco formulates its glazes for cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). It can be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction.
- 1 coat: translucent
- 2–3 coats: opaque
- Thinned with water or medium: transparent, soft gradients
High firing and tableware
At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Orange-A-Peel stays semi-transparent and does not change colour, according to Mayco. At mid and high firing temperatures, designs may run. A test piece on your own clay will show you the result beforehand. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
