Kiln stilts (tripod) – firing glazed ceramics with barely visible contact points
The tripod is a kiln support for glaze firing: you place glazed ceramic pieces on it in the kiln so that they stand securely during the firing. The tiny metal points keep the contact area small and help to avoid glaze defects on the base.
After the glaze firing, the tripod is easily removed from the piece. It is intended for hobby and professional potters. Choose your size from the options.
Using the tripod
Glaze the base of the piece as well and stand it on the points in the kiln, instead of placing it directly on the kiln shelf. This stops the glaze at the foot from fusing to the shelf. Because the glaze softens during firing, the points leave small marks; after firing, rub these down if needed with a grinding stone or fine sandpaper.
Weight and temperature
The firing range goes up to 1250 °C, depending on the weight of the ceramic. For higher temperatures, use several kiln supports. As a precaution, stand heavy pieces on several tripods so that the load is spread and the piece stands securely.
