Botz Stoneware Glaze 9881 Tiefblau – glossy blue with light effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9881 Tiefblau is a liquid, glossy, opaque glaze for stoneware with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. It gives a deep blue with light effects. These appear mainly where the glaze runs slightly during firing or has been applied unevenly.

How strong the effects are and how the blue looks depends on the firing temperature. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof according to the manufacturer, so it absorbs no water. This matters for pieces that will stand outdoors.

Colour effect by firing temperature

The glaze is suitable for the whole firing range from 1220 to 1280 °C, but looks different depending on the temperature. Make a test tile from your own clay beforehand to see which result you like best.

• 1220 °C: a lovely blue with small effects
• 1250 °C: bright blue with light effects, with a green undertone where thinly applied
• 1280 °C: the effects are particularly attractive. Where applied very thinly and on edges, the glaze takes on a strong green undertone.
• 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold is recommended

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use. Apply two to three coats with a brush and let each coat dry thoroughly. Three coats are usually better, as the glaze is then less likely to run. For a firing at 1280 °C, apply only two coats on the lower part of the piece so that nothing runs. To emphasise the light running effects, apply the glaze unevenly on purpose. Thin areas and edges turn greener, so allow for this in your design. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash and leave the foot of the piece unglazed.
