Botz Stoneware Glaze 9885 Temmokubraun – brown effect glaze with crystals

Botz 9885 Temmokubraun is a liquid stoneware effect glaze in a classic brown, with a gloss to satin finish. It is opaque and intended for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. During firing, lighter and black crystals form, giving the surface a lively, speckled look.

The glaze is stable within the firing range of 1220–1280 °C. When fired within this range, the stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof, so it absorbs no water. This also makes it interesting for pieces that stand outdoors, such as plant pots or garden ceramics.

How the glaze looks at different temperatures

Temmokubraun changes noticeably with the firing temperature. You can control the colour effect as follows:

• 1220 °C: brown with light and dark effects, satin finish
• 1250 °C (recommended): brown with light and black crystals, satin to gloss finish
• 1280 °C: slightly reddish brown with light brown and black crystals, gloss finish, strong effect

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush and let each coat dry thoroughly. At 1280 °C, apply only 2 coats, as the effect is particularly strong at that temperature. It is best fired at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. The crystals develop especially well with an even application; if the layer is too thin, the effect is weaker.

Choosing within the range

Temmokubraun is one of the Botz stoneware glazes, which all share the same firing range of 1220–1280 °C. You can therefore fire them together in one kiln. A test piece made from your own clay will show you in advance how strong the light and black effects turn out for you.
