Botz 9352 Craquelé Turquoise Crackle Glaze – Glossy, Semi-Transparent, with a Crackle Network
Botz 9352 Craquelé turquoise liquid glaze is a glossy, semi-transparent turquoise glaze that forms a fine network of cracks (crackle) as it cools. It is used on earthenware fired in the range of 1020–1060 °C. The glaze is also suitable for raku. The bottle contains 200 ml.
The crackle appears because the glaze and the clay body shrink at different rates as they cool. The cracks usually start to show while the piece cools in the kiln and become more pronounced over time. It can take up to a week for all the cracks to become visible.
Applying and firing the glaze
Stir the glaze well and thin it with a little water if needed. Apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics and let it dry thoroughly. Bisque fire at 1000 °C to prevent bubbles from forming. The minimum temperature for the bisque firing is 950 °C.
- Apply one coat only, as the glaze is very prone to running
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C
- If applied on both sides, it forms bubbles on some clays
Making the crackle visible and controlling the effects
After firing, colour the fine cracks with, for example, black Indian ink, coloured acrylic paints or strong black tea. Wipe excess colour off the smooth glaze surface; it stays in the network of cracks. If you apply the glaze a little thicker on horizontal surfaces, such as the inside of plates and bowls, a darker turquoise scale-like crackle forms on some clays. How strong the effect is depends on the clay, and a test piece will show you the result beforehand. Because the glaze runs a lot, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.
