Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-16 Cotton Tail – white gloss glaze for painting and decorating

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-16 Cotton Tail is a white, glossy ceramic glaze for painting on damp clay and bisque. It is formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C or approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and can be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: no hazard labelling.

The glaze stays where you apply it. Colours can sit next to each other without running, so you can place lines, patterns and areas of colour cleanly side by side. The surface fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.

Applying Stroke & Coat

The glaze can be applied to damp clay and to bisque. The number of coats determines the result.

• Stir the glaze well before applying.
• Apply evenly with a brush and let each coat dry.
• One coat looks translucent; for full opacity, apply 2–3 coats.
• Thinned with water, it gives transparent and watercolour effects.
• All colours in the range can be mixed with each other.

Firing and high firing

The usual firing is at cone 06/05. According to Mayco, the glaze can be fired up to cone 10. Bear in mind, however, that colours behave differently at high temperatures: some become more transparent or lighter. There is no separate data for Cotton Tail on this. If you want to fire at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), make a test piece on your own clay first and check the information on the label.

White for details and mixing

Cotton Tail adds light accents next to darker colours and can be used to lighten other Stroke & Coat colours. Because neighbouring colours do not run into each other, you can also paint white patterns and outlines right next to areas of colour.
