Goerg & Schneider 284 stoneware clay for hand-building and modelling
Goerg & Schneider clay 284 is a plastic stoneware clay for hand-building and freely modelling medium-sized pieces. It fires white to light cream and contains 25 % grog with a particle size of 0 to 1.0 mm.
The grog content gives the piece stability, especially on taller or wider work. The surface has a slightly textured look, which you can carefully smooth at the leather-hard stage if you want it more even. The clay is suitable for vessels, figures, sculptures and decorative objects made with slabs or coils, or formed freely. For throwing on the potter's wheel, a finer throwing clay is a better choice.
Working with the clay
The clay is prepared in a plastic state and ready to use. Join added parts and transitions carefully and let the piece dry slowly and evenly, especially where wall thickness varies and at the base. Drying too quickly easily leads to cracks in these areas. When planning the size, allow for shrinkage: the clay shrinks by approx. 6 % when drying and by a further 3 to 6 % when firing, depending on the temperature.
Firing and glazing
The firing range of 1000 °C to 1280 °C covers earthenware and stoneware. At higher temperatures water absorption falls and the clay body becomes denser. The pale clay body suits coloured, transparent and opaque glazes, and can also be left partly unglazed.
- Always match the glaze to the firing temperature and the clay
- Fire a test piece with the intended glaze and temperature beforehand
- Whether a finished piece is suitable for food or drink depends on the glaze, the firing schedule and complete burn-out
Who is this clay for?
The clay is also suitable for beginners who want to build sturdy vessels, figures or simple sculptures. The grog is more noticeable to the touch than with finely grogged clays.
