Botz Engobe 9053 Hellbraun – opaque, matt engobe for ceramics

Botz liquid glaze 9053 Engobe Hellbraun is an opaque, plain light brown engobe for colouring ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Without a glaze, the surface is an earthy matt. The engobe is stable across a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C and is fired at approx. 1050 °C.

As the firing range is so wide, you can combine it with clays and glazes that are fired in this range. Under a clear glaze, the colour looks stronger.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next so that the surface is evenly covered. Fire at approx. 1050 °C. For a more intense colour, apply a thin glaze coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the engobe; according to Botz, this also works in single firing.

Techniques and uses

The engobe is suitable for marbling and feathering techniques. For these, use it slightly thinned on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It also works for sgraffito: you scratch lines or patterns through the engobe layer so that the clay underneath shows through.

• Mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze: coloured glaze with a satin surface and fine speckles, apply 3 coats
• For small objects it can also be used as casting slip: fire at 1050 °C, the clay body sinters and is frost-proof
