Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-23 Jack O'Lantern – glossy orange glaze for decoration and large areas
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-23 Jack O'Lantern is a glossy orange ceramic glaze. You can apply it to damp clay or to bisque-fired ware, on earthenware as well as on stoneware after the bisque firing. It is suitable for lines, motifs and even coverage over larger areas.
You control the opacity through the number of coats: according to Mayco, one coat gives a translucent result, while 2–3 coats make the colour opaque. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it. All colours in the series can be mixed together, and thinning with water gives soft wash effects.
Working with Stroke & Coat
Stir the glaze well before use. Apply 2–3 coats with a soft brush and let each coat dry before applying the next. One coat is enough for a translucent effect. Thinned with water or medium, it gives wash or watercolour effects. Leave the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Firing: cone 06 to 10 and behaviour at cone 6
According to Mayco, the glaze is formulated for cone 06/05 and can be fired up to cone 10, oxidising or reducing. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) oxidising, SC-23 turns transparent according to Mayco, and the colour lightens slightly. If you fire in the stoneware range and expect an opaque orange, a test firing is advisable. Mayco recommends testing first for firing above cone 6.
Dinnerware safety
According to Mayco, the surface is suitable for dinnerware (Dinnerware Safe) after correct firing. The ACMI AP seal means, according to ACMI, that the product is exempt from hazard labelling. According to the data sheet, it applies to the USA only.
