Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-101 Spruce It Up – brush-on ceramic glaze for detail work
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-101 Spruce It Up glaze is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brush strokes or opaque coverage. You apply it to damp clay or bisque ware, whether earthenware or stoneware. The glaze stays where you put it, which helps with fine details, clean lines and multicoloured designs.
The colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own shades. The glaze fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe. The ACMI seal AP (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: exempt from hazard labelling.
Applying the glaze
One coat is slightly translucent; with 2–3 coats you achieve full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next, and do not speed up drying with a hairdryer, as this can cause cracks. Thinned, it gives softer gradients and transparent effects. Leave the foot ring unglazed, otherwise the piece will stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Firing: low and high fire
The normal maturing range is cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing. In high firing the colours behave differently: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) dark shades often become darker and light ones fade. This has not been specifically documented for Spruce It Up, so make a test piece on your own clay before a high firing.
