Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-58 501 Blues – glossy blue brush-on glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-58 501 Blues is a blue ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You apply it with a brush in several coats; it fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over the top. The jar contains 236 ml.
According to Mayco, the range is formulated for maturing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range runs from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing.
Application and coats
Stir the glaze well before applying it. One coat gives a translucent result, and the colour becomes more opaque with each further coat. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before you apply the next, otherwise the layer underneath smears. All colours in the range can be mixed with each other; thinned, they give softer gradients and transparent effects.
Firing and choosing
For a reliable result, fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you fire at mid or high temperature, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), colours may differ and designs may run. How the glaze behaves at cone 6 is given on the label of the jar. Mayco recommends testing with your own clay and your own kiln.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, after firing the glaze is dinnerware safe when used as directed by the manufacturer. According to ACMI, its AP (Approved Product) seal means that no hazard labelling is required. For the finished piece, testing for food contact is the responsibility of the maker of the piece.
