Mayco Stoneware SW-402 Dark Flux – dark effect glaze for contrast and flowing transitions

Mayco Stoneware Dark Flux SW-402 is a dark effect and additive glaze for stoneware, which adds movement, depth and contrast to your glazes. It reacts with adjacent glazes and creates dark, flowing transitions. The effect is particularly striking on light underglazes or stoneware glazes.

The bottle contains 473 ml (16 fl oz). Dark Flux suits artistic and experimental finishes, individual stoneware pieces and work in the studio, workshop or classroom.

Using Dark Flux

You can apply Dark Flux on its own or over other glazes. According to Mayco, how strong the effect is depends on the application, the overlap and the firing schedule. The contrast is most pronounced when the flux sits on or next to light Mayco Stoneware Glazes. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the transitions look in your firing.

Firing and flow

The firing range is 1180–1280 °C. As the glaze reacts with adjacent glazes and flows, leave a glaze-free gap at the foot of the piece. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash if necessary.

Dinnerware and safety

According to Mayco, Dark Flux is dinnerware safe (Dinnerware Safe) if you follow the manufacturer's instructions and fire to the vitrification temperature of the clay. If the glaze surface is heavily textured, weigh this up carefully – according to Mayco, more for aesthetic than for safety reasons. If you sell finished items, you may need to have them tested for food safety first. The product carries warnings, which you will find in the Warning section.
