Plastic ladder lock buckle – adjust straps smoothly
With the ladder lock buckle (also called a slider or strap adjuster) you adjust the length of straps on bags, rucksacks, sports bags or carrying straps. The black plastic buckle comes in four widths: 20, 26, 30 and 40 mm. It is sold individually, so you order exactly as many as your project needs.
Which width do you need?
The width of the buckle matches the width of your webbing. Measure the webbing before ordering. If the webbing is narrower than the buckle, it slips more easily. If it is wider, it will bunch up or not fit through. For light bags and children's rucksacks, 20 or 26 mm is usually enough; for bag straps and rucksack straps, 30 or 40 mm is common.
How to fit the buckle
A ladder lock buckle has several bars side by side, like the rungs of a ladder. You usually sew one end of the strap firmly to one bar. Thread the other end loosely through the buckle. Under tension, the webbing is gripped between the bars. To adjust, lift the buckle slightly and slide the webbing through. Before sewing, lay the webbing in the buckle as a trial to check the direction it runs.
Finish the loose end so that it does not fray – for synthetic webbing, for example, by briefly singeing the cut edge, and for cotton webbing by folding it over and topstitching.
