Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-40 Blueberry Hill – opaque ceramic glaze, glossy without clear glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-40 Blueberry Hill is a ceramic glaze for wet clay and for bisque-fired earthenware and stoneware. It is heavily pigmented and thick. You can brush on strokes and details or apply it as an opaque coat. It fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. The bottle contains 236 ml.
Important for planning your firing: the series is formulated for cone 06/05. According to Mayco, SC-40 changes colour at cone 6 to SC-53 Purple Haze. If you want to use Blueberry Hill at high-fire temperatures, do a test firing first.
Application and coverage
Apply the glaze with a brush. One coat stays translucent, and coverage increases with each further coat. For full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, and thinned with water they give watercolour-style washes. Leave the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf.
Firing: cone 06/05 or high fire
Mayco formulates the series for cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). It can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. For SC-40 the colour shift is documented: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the glaze stays opaque, but the colour changes to SC-53 Purple Haze. If you want Blueberry Hill itself, fire at cone 06/05. For stoneware at high-fire temperatures, test the colour first on a test piece with your own clay and in your own kiln.
Dinnerware
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means exempt from hazard labelling.
