Mayco Stoneware SW-219 Opal Lustre – stoneware glaze for dinnerware

Mayco Stoneware SW-219 Opal Lustre is a stoneware glaze for high-temperature firing in the range of 1220 to 1280 °C. It comes in a 473 ml (16 fl oz) container. It belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series, which offers further colours and effect glazes for the same firing range.

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. It carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal; according to ACMI, it is exempt from hazard labelling. You can check the firing range directly against your clay and your kiln: your stoneware clay and your kiln must be rated for temperatures of at least 1220 °C.

Working with the glaze

Only glaze bisque-fired, dust-free ware. Stir the glaze thoroughly before applying it to bring the settled particles back into suspension. Apply it evenly in several coats and let each coat dry before applying the next. Applying it too thickly is a common cause of runs and pooling at the bottom of the piece.

• Wipe the base and foot clean before firing
• Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash
• A test piece on your clay will show you beforehand how the glaze looks in your firing

Firing and dinnerware

The firing range is 1220–1280 °C. With stoneware glazes, the firing temperature affects the surface and the colour, so always fire according to the firing schedule specified by your kiln and your clay. According to Mayco, the suitability for dinnerware applies to use in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
