Mayco SW-224 Tropical Teal – glossy stoneware glaze in teal

Mayco Stoneware SW-224 Tropical Teal is a glossy, semi-opaque stoneware glaze in teal, a strong blue-green, for ceramics in the firing range cone 5/6 to 10. It belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series, and the container holds 473 ml (16 fl oz). According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe.

Fired at cone 6 in oxidation, it gives a glossy teal with a speckled "float" that breaks on textures. On reliefs and edges the glaze pattern becomes lighter as a result. Fired at cone 10 in reduction, the colour takes on a stronger green tinge. For a more intense blue, apply the glaze more thickly.

Applying and firing Tropical Teal

The glaze is applied to bisque-fired ceramics. Do not spray it.

• Stir thoroughly before use
• Apply to bisque-fired ware; cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) is usual
• Apply 1 to 3 coats, letting each coat dry before the next
• Firing range: cone 5/6 to cone 10, for example cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)

What affects the result

Because the glaze is semi-opaque, it looks different depending on the thickness of application and the clay body: applied thinly, the teal stays lighter; applied more thickly, the blue becomes stronger. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how colour and float turn out for you. On textures and reliefs the float breaks and the colour becomes lighter there. Do not let the glaze pool in recesses; spread it evenly.
