Mayco RK-100 Black Metallic – raku glaze for a dark metallic finish

Mayco RAKU GLAZE RK-100 Black Metallic is a brush-on raku glaze. After a correctly carried out raku firing, it gives a highly reflective, dark metallic finish. Mayco develops its raku glazes so that metallic sheen and crackle patterns form during the raku firing process.

The glaze only works in a raku environment. You will not get the same result in a normal electric kiln firing. Raku is a firing process that is hard to predict, so every firing turns out slightly different.

Working with RK-100 Black Metallic

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired clay body. Do not spray it. Leave the underside and the foot ring unglazed so that the piece does not fuse to the kiln shelf during firing. Fire in the range cone 06–04 (approx. 998–1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This is followed by reduction in combustible material, which you carry out outdoors because of flames and smoke. A thermal-shock-resistant raku clay reduces the risk of the piece cracking during the rapid temperature change.

What to expect

The metallic finish and the crackle patterns depend on the firing, the reduction and the clay, and differ with every firing. Make a test piece first before glazing an elaborate piece. The surface is suitable for decorative items such as bowls, vases or sculptures. It is not suitable for dinnerware because of the surface texture.
