Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-014 Java Bean – brown glaze for fine details and multicolour designs
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-014 Java Bean (Mayco code SC-14) is a brown brush-on glaze for wet clay and for earthenware and stoneware bisque. It stays where you put it: colours can sit side by side without running. That helps with lines, details and multicoloured designs. After firing the surface is glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze.
One coat gives a translucent finish; for full opacity Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Thinned with water it gives wash and watercolour effects, and all the colours in the range can be mixed together.
Firing: cone 06 to 10
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05. The glaze can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) Java Bean stays opaque but becomes lighter and comes close to SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. If you need a specific shade of brown in a high firing, make a test piece first.
Applying Java Bean
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush to wet clay or bisque ware. Let each coat dry before applying the next. When you place colours next to each other, they do not run into one another. In the majolica technique the glaze does not run and does not mix with the colours underneath. One coat is often enough for fine lines; for evenly opaque areas allow 2–3 coats.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required.
