Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-080 Basketball – bold orange glaze for clay and stoneware

Stroke & Coat SC-080 Basketball from Mayco is a ceramic glaze in a bold orange for damp clay, bisqueware and stoneware. One coat gives a slightly transparent finish, and 2–3 coats give full coverage. It fires glossy and needs no clear glaze to do so.

Mayco formulates the series for cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). It is fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Basketball is opaque and does not change colour, according to Mayco. This means you can use the orange in stoneware firings too. With mid-range or high firing, however, fine designs may run.

Applying Basketball

The glaze stays where you put it. This helps with clean lines, fine details and multicoloured designs. Stir it well before applying. Apply it evenly with a brush and let each coat dry before you add the next. Thinned with water or medium, it gives soft gradients and transparent effects. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can tint the orange to suit.

Firing and tableware

Mayco prints the firing behaviour at cone 6 on the label of each colour. Test the glaze on a test piece of your own clay in your own kiln before use, especially if you fire it at mid-range or high temperatures. According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe, meaning it is suitable for tableware. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that it is exempt from hazard labelling.
