Mayco UG-072 Wedgewood Blue – muted blue underglaze for ceramic decoration

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-072 Wedgewood Blue is an underglaze in a muted blue for decorating ceramics, for example floral patterns, illustrations, background areas and subtle gradients. Apply it with a brush to wet clay, greenware or cone 04 bisque, depending on whether you want to paint detail or opaque areas.

Without a clear glaze, Wedgewood Blue fires to a matt finish at cone 06 in an oxidising atmosphere. For a more intense colour and a brilliant gloss, apply a clear glaze or matt clear glaze over it. The jar contains 59 ml (2 oz).

Working with the underglaze

Shake the jar before use and brush the colour on. Let each coat dry before applying the next. For stronger, opaque areas, 2–3 coats are usually needed; fine decoration needs fewer. Under a clear glaze the blue looks richer than when fired without glaze.

• Apply to clay or greenware, leave to dry and fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• If required, apply clear glaze and refire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Mayco recommends testing with your own clay and in your own kiln

Firing range and colour effect

The Fundamentals range fires from cone 06 to cone 10. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising atmosphere the colour becomes more concentrated, while at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in reduction it fades. If you want to fire Wedgewood Blue at high temperatures, make a test piece first.

Use on dinnerware

Wedgewood Blue is only dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze this does not apply. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: exempt from hazard labelling.
