Mayco Underglaze UG-68 Apple Green – fresh apple green for ceramic decoration

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-68 Apple Green is an underglaze in a fresh apple green for decorating ceramics. You apply it to wet clay, greenware or bisque (cone 04) and use it to paint motifs or opaque areas. According to Mayco, you fire it from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The pot contains 59 ml (2 fl oz).

Without glaze, the underglaze fires to a soft, matt finish. Under a clear glaze it gives a brilliant gloss. How the green looks therefore depends on whether you glaze, and at what temperature.

Applying the underglaze

For opaque areas, apply the colour in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry before the next. The same applies to details and patterns painted with a brush. Applied thinly or dabbed on, the colour stays lighter; several coats make it denser.

Colour by firing

The colour behaves differently depending on the firing range. A test tile will show you beforehand how your clay and your kiln render the green.

• Cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising: matt without clear glaze
• Cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising: colour concentration; Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear
• Cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), reducing: the shade shifts more towards blue; SW-001 Stoneware Clear is also recommended

Decorating tableware

The underglaze is dinnerware safe only under a transparent clear glaze suitable for tableware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze this does not apply. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) stands for a product with no hazard labelling.
