Mayco SW-001 Stoneware Clear – glossy clear glaze for stoneware and porcelain
Mayco SW-001 Stoneware Clear is a glossy, clear stoneware glaze for stoneware and porcelain clay bodies. It forms a smooth, transparent layer through which the colour of the clay or underglaze decoration stays visible. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe. The container holds 473 ml.
The glaze works from cone 5/6 to cone 10. Mayco recommends firing at cone 5/6. For reference: cone 6 corresponds to approx. 1222 °C and cone 10 to approx. 1285 °C (in each case a guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, even at cone 10 in reduction firing the clear result is unchanged.
Applying the glaze
Apply the glaze to a soft bisque-fired clay body (bisque firing at cone 04/06, i.e. approx. 1063 °C or approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Stir it well beforehand. Then proceed as follows:
- Brushing: apply 2 or more coats
- Dipping: one coat is enough
- Let each coat dry completely before applying the next
- When dipping, aim for a specific gravity of 1.47–1.51
- Do not spray
Underglazes and crazing
SW-001 looks best over most Mayco underglazes. For some green and brown underglazes, Mayco recommends SW-004 Zinc-Free Clear instead: Fundamentals UG021, UG022, UG198, UG210 and UG232 as well as the Designer Liners SG405 and SG406. Applying the glaze too thickly can encourage crazing. So load the brush less heavily or apply fewer coats. If your piece shows cracks, the glaze thickness is the first thing to check.
