Mayco S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing – clear brush-on glaze

Crystal Clear Brushing (S-2101) is a clear brush-on glaze from Mayco. It protects decorated ceramics and lets the colours underneath show clearly. Fired in an oxidising atmosphere at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C), it gives a clean, clear, glossy surface that is also suitable for lustre. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C) in an oxidising firing, the colour does not change, but bubbles or pinholes may form.

According to Mayco, S-2101 is dinnerware safe and carries the ACMI AP seal, provided you apply and fire the glaze in line with the manufacturer's instructions.

How to apply the glaze

• Shake the glaze well.
• Apply one to two coats to bisque ware fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C) – either undecorated or decorated with low-fire products such as underglazes.
• Allow each coat to dry thoroughly.
• Fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C).

Apply the coats evenly and keep the base free of glaze so that nothing fuses to the kiln shelf. Clear glaze applied too thickly can look milky.

Practical tip: On some red clays, a bluish haze may appear after firing. With red clay, do a test firing first.

How it fits in: S-2101 is a clear glaze for low-fire work. If you mainly fire stoneware at cone 6, choose a clear glaze made for stoneware instead, as S-2101 can form bubbles there.
