Mayco Pansy Purple UG-094 – purple underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-094 Pansy Purple is a purple underglaze for decorating ceramics, supplied in 59 ml (2 fl oz). You apply it with a brush to wet clay, greenware or bisque fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). It suits floral motifs, details and areas of colour.

According to Mayco, the Fundamentals series has a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colour changes across this range, so it is worth paying attention to the firing temperature.

Colour effect and firing

Fired oxidised at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Pansy Purple fires matt, even without a clear glaze. For a stronger colour, apply a clear or matt clear glaze over it. If you fire higher, the shade shifts: oxidised at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the purple darkens to navy blue, and reduction-fired at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it becomes bluer. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand which shade your firing produces.

How to apply the underglaze

• Shake the bottle well before use
• Apply to wet clay, greenware or bisque fired to cone 04
• Apply 2–3 coats, each at right angles to the previous one
• Fire greenware to cone 04 first, then apply clear glaze
• Clear glaze firing: cone 06/05 for earthenware, cone 5–10 for stoneware

Dinnerware only with clear glaze

Pansy Purple is only dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze this does not apply. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: no hazard labelling.
