Proxxon wood turning chisel set – 5 HSS chisels for common woodturning jobs

The Proxxon wood turning chisel set (art. no. 27023) contains five chisels made of high-speed steel (HSS) for turning wood: gouge, flat chisel, pointed tool, roughing tool and finishing tool. That gives you the most common shapes for spindles, bowls, handles and toy figures in one set.

The blades are finely ground and the chisels have wooden handles. They are designed to suit the Proxxon MICRO lathe DB 250. They are stored in a wooden case, where the cutting edges are protected and the set stays organised.

Working with the turning chisels

Set the tool rest of the lathe as close as possible to the workpiece and slightly below centre, so the chisel sits securely. Place the chisel on the rest with the bevel touching first, then guide it slowly towards the rotating wood until it cuts. Take several thin shavings rather than one thick one: the surface will be cleaner and the chisel will wander less. Always wear safety goggles when turning, as shavings and splinters of wood can fly off.

Which chisel for which job

Use the gouge to remove material quickly and to work out curves and coves. Use the flat chisel and the finishing tool to smooth surfaces and cylinders and to prepare the surface for sanding. The pointed tool is suited to fine details such as grooves and edges. For woodwork in the workshop and small turning projects, the set therefore covers a wide range of tasks. Sharpen blunt edges when needed, because a sharp chisel cuts the wood cleanly instead of tearing it.
