The da Vinci watercolour set 5247 contains two size 2 watercolour brushes and a piece of cleaning soap for brush care. You get one brush for washes and large areas and one for small areas and fine detail, both in natural hair.

The series 418 brush is a French watercolour brush in blue Russian squirrel hair, set in a plastic quill on a natural-lacquered handle. It holds plenty of water and suits wash work, blending and larger areas of colour. The series 36Y brush is a round Kolinsky sable brush in Harbin Kolinsky sable hair with a gold ferrule and a short handle glazed in anthracite. It paints small areas and fine lines smoothly. The set is made in Germany.

Which brush for what?

The two brushes complement each other: use the 418 squirrel hair brush for skies, water and backgrounds, and for washing and blending colour. The 36Y with sable hair suits details, outlines and small motifs. You can also use both for silk painting.

Caring for brushes with the soap

The soap cleans the brushes, and its conditioning effect keeps the hairs elastic and supple. Here is how:

• Rinse the brush under lukewarm water and swirl it over the soap until a lather forms.
• Work it in the palm of your hand until no more paint comes out, then rinse thoroughly.
• Shape the hairs and leave the brush to dry lying flat.
• Never leave a brush standing hairs-down in a water jar, or the hairs will bend.
