The da Vinci pastel brush set series 4232 contains three tools for pastel, chalk and charcoal: a soft pony hair round brush, a flat brush with white synthetic bristles and a Rubicell applicator. You can apply dry colour, blend transitions and smudge areas without having to hunt through separate individual brushes.

The set includes one brush each from series 132 (no. 8), series 1015 (no. 6) and series 1005. The handle is short, so you work close to the picture and can control pressure and stroke direction well.

Which brush for what?

The three tools do different jobs, so they complement each other in pastel painting.

• Series 132 no. 8 (pony hair, round): soft hairs for gentle transitions and delicate blending
• Series 1015 no. 6 (synthetic bristles, flat): somewhat firmer, for textured effects and spreading pigment over larger areas
• Series 1005 (Rubicell applicator): for targeted smudging and for lifting off or applying colour in small areas

Working with the set

Apply pastel, chalk or charcoal with the stick first. Then use the pony hair brush to draw the colour in one direction with light pressure until the transition becomes soft. For grainier, more visible textures, use the flat brush. Small areas, such as highlights or edges, can be smudged precisely with the applicator. Clean the brushes between colours by gently tapping out residual pigment, so that no dark residue travels into light areas.
