The da Vinci Synthetic BRISTLE series 8329 school brush is a flat brush with synthetic bristles for lessons, workshops and hobby use. You can use it to paint areas in acrylic, oil or tempera paints. The bristles are springy and vegan, and the long handle is made of natural, unvarnished wood. A rust-free aluminium ferrule holds the bristles firmly on the handle.

According to da Vinci, the brushes are made in Germany. Choose the size from the options. Which width suits you depends on the area: the larger the picture or workpiece, the wider the brush can be. For fine details, a narrow brush or a different brush shape is a better choice.

Working with the flat brush

Use the broad side to cover areas, backgrounds and larger shapes. Use the narrow edge for straight lines and sharp edges. The bristles also apply thicker paint well. With acrylic and tempera, you can add a drop of water if needed so the paint spreads more easily. Wipe excess paint off on the rim of the container before applying, and the coat will stay even.

Cleaning and storage

Wash the brush out thoroughly after painting. Rinse acrylic and tempera paint out with water and a little soap while it is still wet, as dried acrylic is very hard to remove. Remove oil paint first with brush cleaner, then wash with soap. Never stand the brush in water with the bristles pointing down; leave it to dry lying flat. This keeps its shape and the brush lasts a long time.
