da Vinci VARIO-TIP Series 1385 – fan effect brush for lines and textures
The VARIO-TIP fan effect brush from the da Vinci Series 1385 is a specialist brush for textures and effects in watercolour and acrylic painting. The fibres are a mix of NOVA and TOP-ACRYL fibres of different lengths. The finer NOVA fibres hold plenty of paint, while the stronger TOP-ACRYL fibres allow you to work with heavier-bodied colours using the fine tips. As a result, the brush releases the paint in varied strokes and creates parallel line textures.
The ferrule is seamless, made from a single piece, nickel-plated and silver-coloured. The wooden handle is short, hexagonal (Esagonal) and burgundy. The short handle lets you guide the brush close to the painting surface and place lines precisely.
Working with the effect brush
For grasses, hair, fur, bushes or treetops, pick up only a little paint and draw the brush across the surface in one stroke. The fibres of different lengths spread the paint in several parallel lines, which turn out slightly uneven and so look natural. Wipe off excess paint beforehand, otherwise the fibres stick together and the lines turn into blotches. With watercolour, the lines look crisp on dry paper and softer on damp paper. With acrylic, wash the brush out straight after painting, as dried paint in the fine tips is very hard to remove.
Size and choice
Series 1385 is available in size 5, which suits line textures and effect areas. For outlines, details or opaque areas, also use a round or flat brush, as the fan always lays down several lines at once.
