The Hahnemühle Britannia watercolour pad in 24 × 32 cm is a painting pad with 12 sheets of natural white watercolour paper (300 gsm) with a rough surface. According to Hahnemühle, the paper suits all wet techniques, especially wet-on-wet painting, as well as washes and dry techniques such as gouache, tempera and acrylic.

The surface is hard, so paint goes on easily. After wetting, the paper lies very flat, according to the manufacturer. As the pad is glued on all four sides, the sheet stays on the pad while you paint and does not need to be stretched separately. The paper is acid-free, lightfast and has the highest ageing resistance.

Working on the pad

You can paint directly on the glued pad. For wet-on-wet, dampen the sheet evenly and let the colours run into one another. At 300 gsm, the paper cockles less than thinner paper. Let the finished painting dry completely, then carefully lift the sheet from the pad, for example with a palette knife. If it is removed too soon, it may warp.

Choosing the surface and size

Rough means the paper has a pronounced texture that remains visible in the painting. Hahnemühle also offers Britannia with a cold pressed and a satin surface. 24 × 32 cm suits smaller studies, travel sketches or cards well. For larger work, use the Britannia pads in the larger sizes of the series.
