The Hahnemühle Watercolour Selection is a pad measuring 24 × 32 cm with 14 sheets, one sheet each of 14 different watercolour papers from the manufacturer. It lets you try out surfaces, weights and materials before you decide on a whole pad or sheet.

According to Hahnemühle, the selection ranges from papers made of 100 % cotton and papers made of resource-saving fibres to papers made of α-cellulose. The surfaces are matt, rough or satin, and the weights range from 275 to 640 g/m². You can use the sheets for watercolour, gouache and mixed media.

Finding your paper

Paint the same small motif on each sheet, using the same colours and roughly the same amount of water. This shows you straight away how differently the papers absorb colour, how quickly they dry and how the surface handles washes and brush marks. Rough surfaces add more texture to the image, while matt and satin sheets suit finer detail better. The lighter papers of 275 to 300 g/m² tend to cockle more with a lot of water than the 640 g/m² sheet. Tape them down to a board with masking tape, or stretch them.
