The Hahnemühle Britannia watercolour pad in 42 × 56 cm contains 12 sheets of natural white watercolour paper at 300 g/m². You can paint on it with watercolour, gouache, tempera and acrylic, and the large format gives you room for landscapes, still lifes and loose wet-in-wet work.

According to Hahnemühle, the paper is suitable for all wet techniques, especially wet-in-wet painting, as well as for dry techniques and washes. Its hard surface makes it easier to apply colour, and it lies very flat after wetting. Your picture will hardly cockle, even if you use a lot of water. The pad is glued on four sides, so the paper stays stretched on the pad while you paint.

Working with the pad

Sketch lightly and paint directly on the pad. Because it is glued on four sides, the sheet stays taut and dries flat without stretching it beforehand. Let the finished picture dry completely and only then detach the sheet, ideally with a blunt knife at the open section of the glued edge. For wet-in-wet work, proceed in quick steps before the water soaks in, and let colour gradients run softly into one another.

Which size to choose

At 42 × 56 cm, this is the largest size of the Britannia pads in this range. Smaller pads are available in 24 × 32, 30 × 40 and 36 × 48 cm, each with 12 sheets.
