The Faber-Castell Black Edition Skin Tones (art. no. 116414) are 12 triangular coloured pencils in skin shades, for portraits, figures and illustrations that call for a wide range of skin tones. According to Faber-Castell, the colours were chosen by art teachers. You get tones for skin, hair and shading in a single case, rather than having to pick them out of a large assortment.

The pencils have black wood and a Supersoft lead with extra soft colour laydown. The lead releases plenty of colour and, according to the manufacturer, also gives good effects on dark or coloured paper. The special bonding makes it break-resistant. The ergonomic triangular shape gives a good grip, even for small hands. The wood comes from certified, sustainably managed forests (FSC), and production is climate neutral.

Working with the skin tones

Start with light pressure and build up the colour in several layers. This lets you blend tones into one another and create soft transitions. Thanks to the extra soft colour laydown, you quickly reach opaque coverage. On dark or coloured paper, use the lighter tones for highlights and accents that would hardly show on white paper.

Sharpening and care

The soft lead is break-resistant thanks to the special bonding. Even so, sharpen it with a sharp sharpener for triangular pencils and do not press too hard on very fine details.
