Schmincke Kremserweißton – lead-free warm white oil paint

Schmincke Kremserweißton is an artists' oil paint in a warm, semi-opaque white and a lead-free alternative to traditional Cremnitz white (flake white). Instead of toxic lead white, the paint contains a combination of the pigments titanium white and zinc white, ground in safflower oil of particularly pure, pale quality. It comes in a 35 ml tube.

Mixed with other oil paints, Kremserweißton speeds up drying and stabilises the paint film. According to Schmincke, mixed colours made with it have a buttery, smooth consistency and blend well. The flow is improved.

Uses for Kremserweißton

You can use the paint straight from the tube as a warm white or mix it in to lighten other oil paints. Because it is only semi-opaque, glazes and soft transitions remain possible. In a mixture it speeds up drying, which is handy if you want to carry on painting layers quickly. It can also help when mixing with very slow-drying colours. Kremserweißton can be combined with all Schmincke oil paints and auxiliaries.

Kremserweißton or titanium white?

Kremserweißton has slightly less opacity and lightening power than titanium white and is a little warmer in tone. For strongly opaque, cool-looking white highlights, titanium white is the better choice. For softer, warmer lightening and a smooth consistency in a mixture, choose Kremserweißton. Schmincke also offers a larger 120 ml tube if you use a lot of white.
