Norma Professional by Schmincke is an artists' oil paint of the finest quality for classical oil painting, made in Germany. It is formulated with the environment in mind: Schmincke uses renewable raw materials such as purely vegetable oils and additives. According to the manufacturer, the oil combinations reduce the tendency to yellow. The range comprises 84 shades, 27 of them transparent, and all are available in the 35 ml size. All colours have a high lightfastness of 4–5 stars. That matters if you want your paintings to hang for years without any change in colour.

Consistency and application

The paints are ground with a high pigment concentration on three-roller mills and mature for three months before filling. The result is a creamy-buttery consistency that suits fine work as well as bold paint application. All shades dry harmoniously, so you do not need to plan a separate drying time for each colour. Schmincke recommends applying thin layers. For impasto layers or palette knife techniques, mix in Schmincke painting butter (Malbutter, 50 034): it helps thick layers dry through more quickly and reduces the risk of cracking. Norma Professional can be combined without limit with MUSSINI artists' resin oil paints and with other oil paints.

Which colour and which size?

The 27 transparent shades suit translucent layers that you build up on top of one another. How opaque or transparent a shade is differs from colour to colour. The specialist colours include Poppy Red, Agate Brown, Cobalt Turquoise, Neutral Black, as well as Gold, Silver and Bronze. The 35 ml size is available in all shades. If you use a lot of one colour, such as a white for large areas, Schmincke also offers 120 ml and 200 ml for some of the shades. When painting in several layers, the basic rule is "fat over lean": later layers contain more oil than the earlier ones.
