Schmincke MUSSINI Medium 1 thinner for oil paint, 60 ml

Schmincke MUSSINI Medium 1 – low-oil painting medium for underpainting and glazes

Schmincke MUSSINI Medium 1 is a low-oil ("lean") painting medium and thinner for oil paints. You can use it for thin underpaintings and for applying glazes over gouache, tempera and acrylic underpaintings. The bottle contains 60 ml and is made in Germany.

Because the medium is low in oil, the paint layer stays lean. That suits the lower layers of an oil painting. According to Schmincke, it has no significant effect on drying time or gloss.

Working with Medium 1

The medium is ready to use. Mix it into the oil paint at the recommended dosage of 10 to max. 20 %. More medium does not automatically make the layer better, so do not exceed the upper limit of 20 %.

• Shake the bottle before use
• Add the medium to the paint at 10 to max. 20 % and mix well
• If needed, thin further with white spirit (50019)
• Clean tools straight after use
• Close the bottle immediately and store in a cool, dry place

When to use Medium 1

In oil painting you work by the rule "fat over lean": lower layers contain little oil and upper layers more, otherwise the paint layer may crack later. Medium 1 therefore belongs in the first layers, for example for a thin underpainting or for glazes over gouache, tempera and acrylic underpaintings. For later, oilier layers you will need a different, oilier medium. Schmincke recommends carrying out individual preliminary tests; a test swatch on your own painting surface will show you how the mixture behaves.
