Cobra Study water-mixable oil paint set, 12 × 20 ml

Cobra STUDY oil paint set with 12 colours – water-mixable and solvent-free

The Cobra STUDY set from Royal Talens contains 12 water-mixable oil paints in 20 ml tubes and offers a wide introduction to oil painting. You thin the paints with water and clean brushes and palette with water too, so you need no harmful solvents. According to the manufacturer, the paint gives the same results as traditional oil paint.

Cobra STUDY is the student range alongside the Cobra Artist range. It is made with less pigment, which is not ground quite as finely, and is therefore cheaper than the Artist quality. The range comprises 40 semi-transparent, semi-opaque and opaque colours with lightfastness +++, at least 100 years under museum conditions according to the manufacturer.

Colours and mixing

Alongside Titanium White, the set contains the three primary colours Primary Yellow 275, Primary Magenta 369 and Primary Cyan 572. It also includes Permanent Yellow Medium, Vermilion, Pyrrole Red, Ultramarine, Permanent Green Deep and the earth tones Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber. With the primaries and white you can mix many intermediate shades yourself, while the earth tones and the green provide ready-made shades for landscapes and portraits. A separate tube of black is not included.

Working with water-mixable oil paint

You apply the paint like ordinary oil paint, either thickly or thinned with water as a glaze. Rinse the brushes with water after painting, before the paint dries. Cobra can also be combined with traditional oil paint: up to a mixing ratio of 4:1 (Cobra to conventional oil paint), the mixture can still be thinned and cleaned with water, according to the manufacturer.

Which set to choose

This set of 12 colours of 20 ml is the wide selection for getting started. With the 6 × 20 ml set you start smaller. The primary colour set 5 × 40 ml offers larger tubes of the basic colours plus white and ivory black.
