Cobra STUDY water-mixable oil paint set – 6 colours, thin and clean up with water

The Cobra STUDY set from Royal Talens contains 6 tubes of 20 ml water-mixable oil paint. You paint using oil techniques, but thin the paint with water and also clean your brushes and palette with it. According to the manufacturer, the paint gives the same results as traditional oil paint but does without harmful solvents.

The Study range is the more affordable alternative to the Cobra Artist range. Royal Talens uses fewer pigments in it, and they are not ground quite as finely. The range comprises 40 semi-transparent, semi-opaque and opaque colours with the highest lightfastness rating (+++). According to the manufacturer, the colours are lightfast for at least 100 years under museum conditions.

Working with water-mixable oil paint

Squeeze the paint from the tube onto the palette and mix it right there. To thin it, add water only a drop at a time so the paint stays smooth. Clean your brushes with water after painting. Use titanium white to lighten colours. Mix yellow and red to make orange, and yellow and blue for shades of green. Burnt sienna gives you a warm earth tone for shadows and landscapes. The colours can also be combined with traditional oil paint: up to a mixing ratio of 4:1 (Cobra to conventional oil paint), the mixture can still be thinned and cleaned with water, according to the manufacturer.

Which set to choose

The 6 × 20 ml set covers white, yellow, red, blue, green and a brown, and is suitable for trying out the technique. If you would like to paint with more colours, Cobra STUDY is also available as a 12 × 20 ml set. For larger quantities of the primary colours, there is a primary colour set with 5 × 40 ml.
