Cobra Study primary colour set – water-mixable oil paints for mixing your own colours

The Cobra Study primary colour set from Royal Talens contains five water-mixable oil paints in 40 ml tubes: Titanium White, Primary Yellow, Primary Magenta, Primary Cyan and Ivory Black. You can mix many shades yourself from the three primaries and white, and black darkens them. This lets you learn colour mixing and oil painting without buying a large range.

According to the manufacturer, the paint gives the same results as traditional oil paint but needs no harmful solvents. You thin it with water and also clean brushes and palette with water.

Study or Artist – what is the difference?

According to Royal Talens, Cobra Study is made from pigments like those used in the Cobra Artist series. The difference lies in the formulation: the Study colours contain less pigment, and it is not ground quite as finely. In the Study range, Royal Talens offers a selected number of colours. The series has 40 semi-transparent, semi-opaque and opaque colours with the highest lightfastness (+++). With the three primaries, white and black, this set covers the basic equipment for mixing.

Mixing with the set

Use the primary colours to create mixing charts and learn how the shades behave.

• Yellow and cyan make greens, yellow and magenta make orange, and magenta and cyan make violet.
• Add dark colours to the light colour in small amounts, not the other way round, so you control the shade better.
• Titanium White lightens mixtures, and Ivory Black darkens them.
• Thin the paint with water if needed, and wash brushes and palette with water after painting.

Combining with traditional oil paint

According to the manufacturer, Cobra can be mixed with conventional oil paints. At a ratio of 4:1 (Cobra to conventional oil paint), the mixture can still be thinned and cleaned with water. This way you can add colours you already own to the set.
