Schmincke Norma Blue Medium 3 – fast-drying painting medium for water-mixable oil paints

Schmincke Norma Blue Medium 3 is a painting medium with medium oil content for water-mixable oil paints from the NORMA Blue range. It can be thinned with water and speeds up drying. It also adds gloss and depth and makes the paint layers more resistant.

It is based on modified linseed oil and siccative, a drier that speeds up drying. You can also use the medium with traditional oil paints, so it is not limited to NORMA Blue.

Working with Medium 3

Mix the medium into the paint directly on the palette. Because it speeds up drying, it suits you if you want to build up layers quickly. Add it sparingly at first and check the effect on a test piece before transferring it to your painting.

• Put a little paint on the palette and add the medium in small amounts
• Mix thoroughly with the brush or palette knife
• First test the gloss and drying on a piece of canvas board
• When building up layers, the general rule for oil paints applies: leaner layers underneath, oilier layers on top

Medium 2 or Medium 3?

The range includes two painting media that differ in drying time. Medium 3 has a medium oil content and speeds up drying. Medium 2, by contrast, is an oil-rich painting medium that slows drying and allows longer wet-in-wet painting. For quick overpainting and for more gloss and depth, choose Medium 3; for extended blends in wet paint, choose Medium 2.

You will also need: water-mixable oil paints (e.g. NORMA Blue), brushes, palette and a suitable painting surface.

Dispose of leftovers properly as hazardous waste and do not let them reach the groundwater. Rags or paper soaked with linseed oil and siccative can ignite spontaneously: leave them to dry spread out flat, or collect them in a closed metal container.
