Schmincke NORMA Blue basic set – 8 water-mixable oil paints for colour mixing

The NORMA Blue boxed set from Schmincke contains 8 water-mixable oil paints in 35 ml tubes. It is a basic set for anyone who paints in oils and wants to work with water instead of solvent. The eight shades are matched so that you can mix many more colours from them.

The set covers white, yellow, red, blue, green, ochre and black. With 280 ml of paint in total, you can start several paintings without having to buy individual shades again. If you later find something missing, you can add it from the 48 shades in the series.

Mixing colours with the basic set

The selection follows the classic principle: one yellow, two reds and one blue, plus white and black, supplemented by green and ochre. Lemon Yellow and Prussian Blue make cool greens, Cadmium Red Hue Medium and Lemon Yellow make warm oranges, and Madder Red and Prussian Blue make muted violets. Titanium White lightens, Mineral Black darkens. Chromium Oxide Green Brilliant and Natural Light Ochre save you mixing work for landscapes, foliage and earthy tones.

Working with water-mixable oil paint

Apply the paints neat, thinned with water or with the NORMA Blue auxiliaries on canvas or oil painting paper. Clean brushes and palette with water; you do not need any solvent. Begin with thinly diluted layers and add the opaque shades afterwards, so that the colours do not run into each other. As with any oil paint, the layers dry slowly, so allow enough drying time between layers.
